Day 3 of the Boxing Road to Paris 1st World Qualification Tournament in Busto Arsizio, Italy, continued with 24 more bouts in the Men’s 63.5kg and 71kg categories contested in the evening session, concluding the Round of 64 phase of the tournament for those weight classes.
In the Men’s 63.5kg event, Ruslan ABDULLAEV (UZB), one of the most anticipated boxers in this category, stunned India’s Thapa SHIVA amid round 1, securing a spot in the Round of 32 of the tournament with ease. On his Road to Paris, he will meet Jose Adriel DIAZ RODRIGUEZ (PUR) who defeated CHOI Minsu (KOR) at the end of today’s afternoon session.
In another highlight match of the session, USA’s Emilio GARCIA left few chances to his opponent Ahmad SHTIWI of Israel. Leading throughout the whole match, the American athlete beat SHTIWI via a unanimous decision. GARCIA is now bound to a stellar Round of 32 bout against Cuba’s Erislandy ALVAREZ, to be held on March 7.
In the same weight category, Serbia’s Sendrik Aleksej VITOROVIC outscored Ukraine’s Danyil ZAMORYLO by unanimous decision, after the Ukrainian athlete received a one-point deduction for holding. The Serbian athlete booked a spot in the next phase of the tournament, where he will meet Stelios KIRSANDIS (GRE).
Completing the Men’s 63.5kg Round of 32 brackets, Usmonov BAKHODUR (TJK), Ali HABIBINEZHAD (IRI), Abdelhaq NADIR (MAR), Patris MUGHALZAI (GBR), NISHIYAMA Shion (JPN), Aliyev TAYFUR (AZE), Rosenov Radoslav SIMEBOV (BUL), Uulu Mukhammedsabyr BAZARBAY (KAZ) all qualified for the tournament’s next phase.
Moving on to the Men’s 71kg weight class, Gurgen MADOYAN (ARM) beat Vasile CEBOTARI (MDA) by unanimous decision after a fierce match. Up next, the Armenian boxer will face Spain’s Sergio MARTINEZ who outscored Carlos Tobar, Guatemala, today.
Joining them in the Round of 32 phase of the tournament, this evening’s bout winners Prince Aaron SOLOMON (TTO), Moslem Maghsoudi Mal AMIRI (IRI), Sarkhan ALIYEV (AZE), Eskerkhan MADIEV (GEO), Aleksandr TROFIMCUK (LTU), Nishant DEV (IND), Mohamed RACHEM (BEL), Ladislav HORVATH (SVK), Omari JONES (USA), and Christos KARATIS (GRE) will all step back onto Busto Arsizio’s ring on March 7.
The World Qualification Tournament, which sees the participation of over 600 boxers from 113 NOCs, the Boxing Refugees Team (BRT), and the Independent Neutral Athletes (AIN) will continue tomorrow with three more boxing sessions held at the E-Work Arena in Busto Arsizio. Athletes keep on advancing in the brackets, on their way to the 49 coveted Paris 2024 Quota Places, that will be distributed to the best across 13 categories on the last two days, March 10 and 11.
