Day 8’s evening session established the lineup for tomorrow’s Paris 2024 quota place matches in three weight classes: Women’s 57kg (with 2 quotas available to the winners of tomorrow’s semifinals), and in the Men’s 57kg and 71kg categories (with 4 quotas available in each category, to be awarded to the winners of tomorrow’s quarterfinals).
In today’s Women’s 57kg quarterfinals, Tokyo 2020 Silver medalist Nesthy PETECIO (PHI) emerged victorious over Maud VAN DER TOORN (NED). The Dutch athlete started strong, winning round 1 with the votes of all judges. However, PETECIO rallied in round 2, ultimately securing an unanimous decision win to advance to the semifinal. There, she will face Esra YILDIZ KAHRAMAN (TUR), who won a 4:1 split decision against Elise GLYNN. In the second semifinal of the division, Julia SZEREMETA (POL) will meet Alyssa MENDOZA (USA) after defeating Sitora TURDIBEKOVA (UZB) and Jin HYEJEONG (KOR), respectively.
In the Men’s 57kg division Round of 16, Shukur OVEZOV (TKM) advanced as Tokyo 2020 Silver medalist Carlo PAALAM (PHI) abandoned. OVEZOV will next face Ireland’s Jude GALLAGHER, who defeated Soulaimane SAMGHOULI (MAR) with a score of 4 points to 1.
In the same division, Makhmud SABYRKHAN (KAZ) and Asror VOKHIDOV (TJK) progressed by eliminating Josue TIRADO PAGAN CALEB (PUR) and Umid RUSTAMOV (AZE), respectively. OLIVEIRA LUIZ (BRA) secured a quarterfinal spot by defeating GOMTSYAN ARTYUSH (GEO) and will now face Owain HARRIS-ALLAN (GBR), who defeated FERNANDEZ GARCIA Lucas Alexander (URU) by a score of 5-0. LYU PING (CHN) won a close match against GOMES PEDRO MANUEL (ANG) and will meet Colombia’s Leandro GONZALEZ LANDAZURY YILMAR.
In the Men’s 71kg category, Aslanbek SHYMBERGENOV (KAZ) secured a hard-fought victory against Bayramdurdy NURMUHAMMEDOV (TKM) and will face Sarkhan ALIYEV (AZE) in the quarterfinals. Wanderson DE OLIVEIRA (BRA) will square off against Rami Mofid KIWAN (BUL), while Asadkhuja MUYDINKHUJAEV (UZB) will take on Zeyad EASHASH (JOR), and Omari JONES (USA) will face NISHANT DEV (IND).
In both the Men’s 63.5kg and 71kg divisions, four quota places are at stake in the Boxing Road to Paris 1st World Qualification Tournament in Busto Arsizio, Italy. Therefore, all tomorrow’s quarterfinal winners in both divisions will secure a ticket to Paris.
As in every category at this tournament, in line with the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit’s primary mandate and to focus on the athletes and their journey to Paris, boxers will only compete until the quota places are allocated, and no medal matches or ceremonies will be held.
The tournament will conclude tomorrow, 11 March, when 47 Paris 2024 Olympic quota places will be allocated across all 13 weight categories.
