In a tough ring clash, 23-year-old Zambian talent Patrick CHINYEMBA showcased his skills and determination to defeat Amit AMIT from India, earning a 4:1 win. CHINYEMBA will face David DE PINA of Cabo Verde in the quarterfinals, who revealed potent offensive tactics to outclass 2023 Asian Games silver medallist Thitisan PANMOT (THA) by 4:1.
In the Men’s 80kg class, boxing fans enjoyed a thrilling bout between 2023 Pacific Games gold medallist Callum PETERS (AUS) and Nurbek ORALBAY (KAZ). The Kazakh dominated the first round, taking it 5:0, but the Australian boxer turned the tide in round two. ORALBAY’s tactics and blows in round three were slightly more effective, earning him a 3:2 split decision victory. Advancing to the quarterfinals, ORALBAY will meet Murad ALLAHVERDIYEV (AZE), who managed to defeat two-time Olympian and #4 seed Abdelrahman ABDELGAWWAD (EGY) by 3-2 after a tight contest.
Making her debut at the boxing tournament in Paris, Cholmi PANG (DPK) left everyone in awe with an exceptional performance in the Women’s 54kg event, sealing a commanding 5:0 unanimous decision victory over Nigina UKTAMOVA (UZB). In the same weight class, 2023 European Games bronze medallist Hatice AKBAS (TUR) eased past 2023 Pacific Games gold medallist Tiana ECHEGARAY (AUS) with a 5:0 victory. The Turkish boxer booked a quarterfinal match against Enkhjargal MUNGUNTSETSEG of Mongolia, who also impressed with a convincing 4:1 win over 2023 European Games silver medallist Lenuta Lacramioara PERIJOC of Romania.
In a notable Women’s 57kg round-of-16 bout, the 20-year-old Alyssa MENDOZA (USA) edged Tajikistan’s Mijgona SAMADOVA (TJK) 3:2. After MENDOZA narrowly took round one 3/2, her rival stepped up in round two, targeting MENDOZA’s face. However, the American talent displayed resilience and secured a 3/2 split decision win.
In the same weight category, Tokyo 2020 silver medallist and the first Filipina boxer to win an Olympic medal, Nesthy PETECIO (PHI), made her debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a brilliant performance against JAISMINE of India. The national hero for the Philippines didn’t disappoint, delivering a flurry of punches to win her bout with a sharp 5:0 unanimous decision.
