European Games Wrap-Up: Medals and Quota Places

02/07/2023

The boxing tournament of the III European Games concluded today at the Nowy Targ Arena, where 319 athletes from 42 countries and the European Refugee Athletes team competed from June 23 to July 2 in 13 weight categories (7 men, 6 women).

France finished atop the medal standings with an outstanding total of 7 medals, including 3 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze. Turkie ended up in second place, collecting 6 medals (2 gold, 1 silver, and 3 bronze). Ireland followed in third, thanks to 2 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze, for a total of 5 athletes on the podium.

The European Games boxing tournament also served as a Boxing Road to Paris continental qualifier, with 44 Olympic Games quota places up for grabs across 13 weight categories.

A total of 17 countries secured at least one quota place out of the 42 participating nations, with Team France winning the highest number of Olympic berths. The host of the next Olympic Games secured an impressive number of seven slots (4 women, 3 men), preparing to deliver a strong performance on their home turf in Paris in one year.

Boxing powerhouse Turkie also finished in the spotlight as they secured six Olympic quotas (4 women, 2 men) on the rings of the Nowy Targ Arena. Team Ireland chased them with five slots collected during the tournament (3 women, 2 men).

What’s up next on the Boxing Road to Paris? According to the Paris 2024 qualification system for boxing, a total of 248 Olympic quota places are to be distributed. With 44 of them awarded here in Poland, the remaining 204 will be assigned through four more continental qualifiers and two World Qualifiers.

Spotlights are now turning to Dakar, Senegal, where an ad-hoc Africa Qualification Tournament will be held on September 9-15, 2023. Olympic qualifications for boxing will then continue at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou (CHN) from September 23 to October 8, 2023. The American continent will follow swiftly, with boxers entering the Pan American Games ring from October 20 to November 5, 2023. Finally, the 2023 Pacific Games will serve as a qualifier for Oceania from November 27 to December 2, 2023. The two World Qualifiers will be held in the first and second quarters of 2024, but the exact dates and locations haven’t been unveiled yet. Stay tuned for more boxing action!
