Bangkok’s Day 7: 62 Bouts Lit Up the Indoor Arena

The Boxing Road to Paris 2nd World Qualification Tournament continued today in Bangkok, Thailand, with 62 bouts. Sachin SACHIN (IND) and Batuhan CIFTCI (TUR) kicked off Day 7 of boxing at the Indoor Stadium Huamark with a thrilling bout. The Indian displayed excellent moves and boxing skills, winning the match decisively with a 5:0 score and cruising into the quarterfinals in the Men’s 57kg weight category. There, he will face Samuel KISTOHURRY of France, who also secured a 5:0 victory over Hyungseung KIM (KOR).

The Tokyo 2020 silver medalist, Carlo PAALAM (PHI), engaged in a close battle with Artur BAZEYAN (ARM). The Filipino boxer edged the first round 3:2 and maintained his momentum with speed and effective punches in the second round. Despite BAZEYAN’s counterattack earning him the third round by the narrowest of margins, PAALAM emerged victorious with a 3:2 split decision. Moving forward, he is set to meet the Dominican Republic’s rising star, Jose Luis DE LO SANTOS FELIZ, who dominated Cheng Wei LEE (TPE) with a 5:0 win.

In the Men’s 80kg weight division, another Dominican talent, Cristian Javier PINALES (DOM), shone in his round-of-32 bout against Saratibau AMINIASI (FIJ). PINALES impressed the judges with exceptional shots and footwork, securing a 5:0 unanimous decision victory.

Meanwhile, Yojerlin CESAR (FRA) won a 3:2 split decision against Gradus KRAUS (NED) after a pulsating battle. At the end of the bout, the four judges who awarded even scores (27-27), nominated the French as the winner. 

Dalai GANZORIG (MGL) and Meysam GHESHLAGHI (IRN) also delivered an exciting bout. The Mongolian dominated the first round 5:0, but the Iranian fighter turned the tide in rounds two and three, collecting 10/9 from all judges and claiming a unanimous decision victory.

Home favorite Weerapon JONGJOHO (THA) lit up the stadium during his bout against Omurbek BEKZHIGIT UULU (KGZ). The Thai athlete dominated the first round and continued with an offensive strategy in the second, flooring his rival once and causing two standing counts. The referee stopped the contest, awarding JONGJOHO the victory.

In the Men’s 92kg event, Erkin ADYLBEK UULU (KGZ) displayed explosive power and excellent boxing skills to defeat David MICHALEK (SVK) with a commanding 5:0 unanimous decision. He will face Aryan SAED PANAH of the Boxing Refugee Team in the round-of-16, who secured a 5:0 win against Marlon Andres HURTADO COLORADO (COL).

The Tokyo 2020 bronze medalist, Loren Berto ALFONSO DOMINGUEZ (AZE), met expectations by winning his bout against Marko CALIC (CRO) with a full scorecard from all judges.

There was an upset for Rogelio ROMERO (MEX), a Tokyo 2020 Olympian who finished in 5th position, as he was outscored by Greece’s Vagkan NANITZANIAN in a controlled 5:0 battle.

In less than three minutes, Alexander Christian OKAFOR (GER) knocked out Rodrigues ANTONIO (POR). He will face Mateusz BEREZNICKI (POL), who triumphed over Peter Abuti ALWANGA (KEN) with a 5:0 unanimous decision.

Team USA’s Alyssa MENDOZA (USA) convincingly won her round-of-32 match in the Women’s 57kg class, overcoming Olga-Pavlina PAPADATOU (GRE) 5:0. Next, she will meet Anastasiia MOLOCHKO (UKR), who dominated Hadeel Ghazwan S ASHOUR (KSA) with a 5:0 victory.

Zichun XU (CHN) also left her mark by defeating Jin Hyang PAEK (PRK) 5:0, displaying impressive punching skills. She will face Lucie HORVATH SEDLACKOVA (CZE), who overwhelmed A Dana (QAT) before the referee stopped the contest in the third round.

Fans enjoyed the performance of Nilawan TECHASUEP (THA) against Tokyo 2020 Olympian Nikolina CACIC (CRO). The Thai boxer earned maximum points from all judges in the first two rounds. Despite CACIC’s strong counterattack in the third round, TECHASUEP secured the victory by 5:0.

In the Men’s 51kg weight division, Azat MAKHMETOV (BRN) showcased his superior boxing skills, convincingly defeating Keymberth Jose GONZALEZ SOLORZANO (VEN) with a 5:0 unanimous decision. With the same scoreline, Dmytro ZAMOTAYEV (UKR) overcame 2023 Pan American Games bronze medalist Ramon Nicanor QUIROGA (ARG), displaying tactical prowess and precision.

Sean MARI (IRL) was eliminated in his second round, as Muhammad Abdul Qaiyum ARIFFIN (MAS) took control with potent offensive tactics, forcing MARI to abandon the match. ARIFFIN will next face Gan-Erdene GANKHUYAG (MGL), who earned a 5:0 win against Eriu TEMAKAU (KIR).

Yuberjen Herney MARTINEZ RIVAS will not represent Colombia for a third time at the Olympic Games, as he was defeated by Roscoe HILL (USA), who sealed a 5:0 victory. HILL will face Huthaifa ESHISH (JOR), who triumphed over Nikolas PAWLIK (POL) by 4:1.

The action at Indoor Stadium Huamark continues tomorrow, May 31, featuring 60 bouts, including preliminaries in the Women’s 50kg, Women’s 66kg, Men’s 51kg, and Men’s 92kg, and the quarterfinals in the Women’s 60kg, Men’s 57kg, Men’s 63.5kg, Men’s 71kg, and Men’s 80kg weight divisions.
