Day-5 Evening Session: Exciting Action Unfolds in Round of 16 Matches at III European Games Boxing Tournament

Twenty-four more bouts took place in the evening session at the Nowy Targ Arena, marking Session 10 of the III European Games Boxing Tournament in Krakow and Malapolska. Starting at 18:00, this session concluded the Round of 16 matches for the Women’s 50kg, 57kg, and 75kg, as well as the Men’s 57kg, 71kg, and +92kg weight classes, shaping the brackets for the upcoming quarterfinals.

In the Women’s 50kg category, Spain’s Laura Fuertes Fernandez secured victory in the first bout of the evening with a 3-2 split decision win over Sofie Vinther Rosshaug from Denmark. She is now set to face Rita de Pinho Soares from Portugal in the quarterfinals. Another matchup in the same category will feature France’s Wassila Lkhadiri against Daina Moorehouse from Ireland, who defeated Ukraine’s Tetiana Kob on points.

Michaela Walsh from Ireland, the 2022 Commonwealth champion, dominated her Round of 16 bout in the Women’s 57kg division with a convincing unanimous decision win against Turkey’s Aysen Taskin. Walsh will now face Melissa Juvonen Mortensen from Denmark, who secured a 5-0 victory over Dea Bolanca from Croatia.

In the same weight category, Mahsati Hamzayeva Aghamaliy from Azerbaijan emerged victorious with an unanimous decision over Armenia’s Tatevik Khachantryan. She is scheduled to face France’s Amina Zidani, who won 4-1 against Lucie Sedlackova from Czechia.

Poland’s Elzbieta Wojcik thrilled the home crowd as she triumphed over Ukraine’s Anastasiia Chernokolenko in the Women’s 75kg event. Displaying excellent skills, Wojcik claimed a comfortable 5-0 victory. She will now face Busra Isildar from Turkey, who narrowly defeated Lithuania’s Gabriele Stonkute with a 3-2 score.

In another Women’s 75kg matchup, Love Nelli Holgersson from Sweden put on an impressive performance, securing a dominant 5-0 decision win against Serbia’s Nikolina Gajic. Holgersson will meet Ireland’s Aoife O’Rourke in the quarterfinals, who advanced after a tense bout against Cindy Winner Djankeu Ngamba of the European Refugee Team with a slim 3-2 margin.

Turning to the Men’s event, Vasile Usturoi from Belgium emerged victorious with a unanimous decision win against Albania’s Ardit Murja in the Men’s 57kg weight class. Usturoi will now face Denmark’s Frederik Lundgaard Jensen in the quarterfinals. Jensen showcased his skills with a commanding 5-0 victory over Great Britain’s Jack James Dryden.

Spain’s Jose Quiles Brotons secured his place in the Men’s 57kg quarterfinals with a unanimous decision win against Batuhan Ciftci from Turkey. Brotons will face Georgia’s Artyush Gomtsyan in the next round. Earlier in the day, Gomtsyan secured his spot by defeating Poland’s Jaroslaw Iwanow with a 4-1 score.

In the Men’s 71kg category, Albania’s Alban Beqiri cleared the Round of 16 with a 4-1 victory over Lithuania’s Aleksandr Trofimcu. Beqiri will meet Nikolai Terteryan from Denmark, who achieved a comprehensive 5-0 victory over Italy’s Salvatore Cavallaro.

In the Men’s +92kg division, Yordan Alain Hernandez Morejon from Bulgaria secured a 4-1 decision win against Italy’s Diego Lenzi. Hernandez Morejon is now set to face Lithuania’s Jonas Jazevicius, who defeated Shpejtim Shabani from Kosovo by RSC (Referee Stop Contest).

Delicious Justin Orie, the Commonwealth champion from Great Britain, delivered an outstanding performance, winning with a flawless 5-0 score against Norway’s Omar Mohamed Shiha. Armenia’s Davit Chaloyan, who won by unanimous decision against Martin Pinc from Czechia, will face Orie in the quarterfinals.

The III European Games Boxing Tournament is currently underway at the Nowy Targ Arena in Krakow and Malapolska, Poland. A total of 319 athletes from 42 countries and the European Refugee Team are competing in 13 weight categories from June 23 to July 2. This tournament is part of the Boxing Road to Paris series, supervised by the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit (PBU), and serves as a continental Olympic qualifier for the upcoming Games. There are 44 qualification slots available for the best boxers in each category.
