Evening Triumphs: Poland, Italy and Norway Shine as Paris 2024 Boxing Quota Places get closer

10/03/2024

While today’s morning session allocated the first two Paris 2024 Quota Places of the tournament in the Women’s 60kg weight class, Busto Arsizio’s day 7’s evening session completed the Round of 16 and decided the line-up of the quarterfinals for six different categories: Women’s 54kg, 66kg, and 75kg, and Men’s 63kg, 92kg, and +92kg.

In line with the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit’s primary mandate to focus on the athletes and their road to Paris, boxers will only compete until the quota places are distributed, and no medal matches or ceremonies will be staged.

The tournament will therefore culminate in the quarterfinals to be held on March 11 across all weight categories (4 quota places available in each), except for the women’s 57kg division, which advances to the semifinals (with 2 quota places available, also on March 11), and the women’s 60kg category, where 3 quota places are on offer (2 quotas awarded today, and 1 quota to be awarded on the same March 11 in a box-off).

Today’s evening session turned into a success for the home team, Italy, which advanced two female athletes to the quarterfinals.

Sirine CHARAABI defeated Marta LOPEZ DEL ARBOL of Spain in the Women’s 54kg event and will now face South Korea’s Aeji IM (who beat Chinese Taipei’s Huang HSIAO WEN 4:1) on her way to Paris 2024.

In the following Women’s 66kg Round of 16, Italy’s Angela CARINI claimed a unanimous decision victory against Sara KALI of Canada, leading her bout from the first to the last round, supported by local supporters crowding the E-Work Arena. She booked a spot in the category’s semifinal, where she will fight Moreira IVANUSA (CPV) for a Paris 2024 qualification spot.

Norway also advanced two athletes to the Olympic qualification bouts to be held on March 11, as Sunniva HOFSTAD beat Lithuania’s Gabriele STONKUTE in the Women’s 75kg weight class with a sharp 5:0 score, and Omar SHIHA clinched a win against Cameroon’s Thomas Vianney MBOUA (DSQ) in the Men’s +92kg event.

Team Poland celebrated three victories, with Aneta RYGIELSKA in the Women’s 66kg (4:1 against Kazakhstan’s Natalya BOGDANOVA), Elzbieta WOJCIK in the Women’s 75kg (WO of Vietnam’s LUU Diem Quynh), and Mateusz BEREZNICKI in the Men’s 92kg (3:2 against France’s Soheb BOUAFIA).
