The Olympic Games Paris 2024 Boxing Tournament is organized under the authority of the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit (PBU). The PBU is an ad-hoc unit created by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board with the mandate to organise and ensure the delivery of the Olympic Boxing Qualifying Tournaments and the Boxing Competition at Paris 2024.
The PBU was created following the suspension of the Olympic recognition of the International Boxing Association (IBA) by the IOC Session in June 2019 – the IBA’s recognition was subsequently withdrawn by the IOC Session in June 2023 – and the announcement in June 2022 that the IBA would not run the Olympic Boxing Qualifying Tournaments and the Boxing Competition at the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

Two (2), both in 2024. The qualification pathway to the Olympic Games Paris 2024 for boxers is based on the principle of providing up to a maximum of three (3) qualification opportunities to athletes in each weight category. Therefore, after the conclusion of the continental qualification tournaments, two (2) World Qualification Tournaments are planned to take place in 2024 to serve as additional chances for those NOCs who have not yet qualified boxers for the respective weight categories.
The 1st World Qualification Tournament took place in Busto Arsizio, Italy, from 3 to 11 March, 2024. The 2nd World Qualification Tournament is taking places in Bangkok, Thailand, from 24 May to the 3 June, 2024.
Yes, the definition of boxer within the Paris 2024 Event Regulations does not make a distinction between “professional” and “amateur” athletes. However, any athlete’s participation is subject to compliance with the general eligibility criteria found in the Qualification System.
As was the case for Tokyo 2020 Olympic boxing qualifiers, National Olympic Committees (NOCs) will be asked to work with their National Federations (NFs). NOCs will be required to confirm the technical and medical standard of their athletes (as stipulated in the Paris 2024 Qualification System for Boxing) entered in the boxing qualification events. In the instance that a National Federation has not recommended athletes to its respective NOC to be entered for the qualification tournaments and/or the Games themselves, the NOC is empowered to enter its athletes without the recommendation of the National Federation.
As detailed above, NOCs are ultimately in charge of entries. Therefore the respective Boxing NFs’s status with IBA does not have an impact on athletes’ participation in the Olympic Games Paris 2024 and/or its qualification tournaments.
Please see Paragraph D. of the Qualification System.
No, quota places are nominal (by name). If an NOC that has a confirmed allocated quota place would like to withdraw this athlete, no substitution will be allowed, and the quota place will be reallocated in accordance with the reallocation process found in the Qualification System.
The Tripartite Commission Universality Places will be allocated after the completion of the last qualification tournament. The 9 quota places (5 Women, 4 Men) are exclusive to the eligible NOCs that have submitted their requests to the IOC before the deadline of 15 January 2024.
The Paris 2024 Boxing Unit does not have an athlete ranking system in place and it does not recognize any existing ranking system.
A seeding system will be implemented at the Boxing tournament of the Olympic Games Paris 2024, in order to separate top-qualified boxers in each weight category. Seeding positions will be allocated based on on-field results and a random draw, rather than a cumulative ranking system. The seeding system will rely on the results of the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit’s sanctioned continental qualifiers, with eight boxers being seeded in each of the 13 Olympic weight categories. Check the “Qualification System and Rules” page of this website for more information.
The Qualification Tournaments did not have any seeding in place.
