Following yesterday’s spectacular Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony, the Paris 2024 Boxing Tournament is set to commence today, 27th of July, at the North Paris Arena (NPA), where two sessions will take place at 15:30 and 20:00 (CET), respectively.
The Women’s 54kg and 60kg and the Men’s 63.5kg and 80kg divisions are in the spotlight, with 18 round-of-32 bouts on the program for the day.
The afternoon session will start off with three Women’s 54kg matches: HUANG Hsiao Wen (TPE) will face Bojana GOJKOVIC (MNE), Jutamas JITPONG (THA) will go up against Sara CIRKOVIC (SER), followed by a bout between Nigina UKTAMOVA (UZB) and Yomma AYYAD (EGY).
The session will continue with the Women’s 60kg division, seeing Feofaaki EPENISA (TGA) going into the ring against Thin Linh HA (VIE), Maria Jose PALACIOS ESPINOZA (ECU) meeting Agnes ALEXIUSSON (SWE), and WU Shih Yi (TPE) facing OH Yeonji (KOR).
Three Men’s bouts will complete the 15:30’s session. In the Men’s 63.5kg event, Bakhodur USMONOV (TJK) meets Radoslav Simeonov ROSENOV (BUL), followed by Obada ALJASBEH (JOR) against Dean CLANCY (IRL). In the following Men’s 80kg match, Weerapon JONGJOHO (THA) is set to go up against Cristian JAVIER PINALES (DOM).
In the evening session starting at 20:00, Charely DAVISON (GBR) will meet Hatice AKBAS (TUR) in the Women’s 54kg category, followed by two bouts featuring Enkhjargal MUNGUNTSETSEG (MGL) against Sirine CHARAABI (ITA), and PREETI (IND) against Thin Kim Anh VO (VIE).
Later into the session, in the Women’s 60kg weight category, Alessia MESIANO (ITA) will face Gizem OZER (TUR), Thananya SOMNUEK (THA) will meet Donjeta SADIKU (KOS), and France’s medal hope Estelle MOSSELY will go up against USA’s Jajaira GONZALEZ.
In the Men’s 63.5kg category, powerhouse Cuba will debut in this Olympic boxing tournament with Erislandy ALVAREZ BORGES meeting John UME (PNG), while Bazarbay Uulu MUKHAMMEDSABYR (KAZ) will go up against Oier IBARRECHE CONDE (ESP).
In the last bout of the day, Kaan AYKUTSUN of Turkey will face Italy’s Salvatore CAVALLARO in the Men’s 80kg division.
The Boxing Tournament of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 features 248 athletes (124 women boxers and 124 men boxers) from 70 National Olympic Committees, including the IOC Refugee Olympic Team. They are competing in 13 different weight categories (seven men’s and six women’s events) from the 27 July through the 10 August. The preliminary phases of the tournament – from 27 July through 4 August – are held at the North Paris Arena (NPA), while the final phases – including all gold medal matches – will be hosted at the iconic Roland-Garros Arena.
