The Paris 2024 Olympic Boxing tournament continues today at the North Paris Arena. The action continued on day two with the afternoon session featuring eight contests in the Men’s 51kg, 71kg, and 92kg categories, as well as the Women’s 50kg and 66kg classes.
The session started with an emotional bout in the Men’s 57kg event, where Sweden’s Nebil IBRAHIM faced Wasim ABUSAL, the first boxer to represent Palestine at the Olympic Games. The 23-year-old Swede displayed remarkable skill and determination, securing a unanimous 5:0 decision win.
Shortly after, in the Men’s 71kg weight category, Zeyad EASHASH (JOR) engaged in a tough ring battle against Aslanbek SHYMBERGENOV (KAZ). The 2023 Asian Games bronze medallist from Kazakhstan edged the first and second rounds 3:2, but the Jordanian boxer refused to give up, giving his all to clinch the third round and a 3:2 split decision victory.
Two-time Pacific Games gold medallist Ato PLODZICKI-FAOAGALI suffered a heavy defeat today as Victor SCHELSTRAETE (BEL) delivered a perfect performance to advance in the tournament, earning a full scorecard from the judges.
In the Men’s 92kg event, it was a day to remember for Loren Berto ALFONSO DOMINGUEZ (AZE), who managed to defeat two-time Olympic gold medallist Julio Cesar LA CRUZ PERAZA (CUB) who was on his quest for a third Olympic title. The contest was very close: the Cuban took the lead in the first and second rounds by the thinnest of margins. ALFONSO DOMINGUEZ showcased a brilliant counterattack in the third round, winning the bout via a 3:2 split decision.
Moments later, another top contender in the Men’s 92kg weight category was eliminated from the tournament: the #3 seed Aziz Abbes MOUHIIDINE (ITA) didn’t make it through after a close ring battle against Lazizbek MULLOJONOV (UZB), who went on the offensive and landed some decisive blows in the third round to take a 4:1 victory.
Team Italy suffered another hard blow as Nazym KYZAIBAY (KAZ) defeated Giordana SORRENTINO (ITA) 4:1 in their Women’s 50kg preliminary bout. The Italian was on top at first, but the Kazakh boxer managed to find her rhythm, securing the following rounds.
In the same weight category, Fatima HERRERA (MEX) won a 3:2 split decision over 2023 European Games bronze medallist Laura FUERTES FERNANDEZ (ESP).
In the Women’s 66kg class, 2023 European Games bronze medallist Anna Luca HAMORI (HUN) kept her Olympic dream alive by defeating Grainne WALSH (IRL) after a close ring battle, clinching a 4:1 split decision victory.
